Backgammon: Special Rules

Here are two of the rules that have been added to fuel the excitement in backgammon games:

The doubling cube

This rule allows the gambling player who's more likely to win to double the stakes. That gambling player must present the doubling cube to his opponent before rolling the dice to show interest of doubling the stakes. The doubling cube, by the way, is a die where the numbers printed are powers of two. To mark that the stakes have just been doubled, the doubling cube's number two face is shown up. The opponent may only accept the double or quit the game right away. Gambling players who are into poker may be familiar with this strategy, which is called raising; in poker, if the opponent cannot take the raise, he folds.

To accept the double is very hard, especially if you are at the losing end. That is why a gambling player must put a lot thought to it before accepting the double. At the same time, gambling players must not be always eager to double the stakes. There is a chance that you have fallen into your opponent's trap. He or hse might have successfully led you to believe that you are winning, when in reality he is just waiting for you to double before launching his attack.

Some gambling players use the doubling cube just to scare their opponents away and make them quit right there and then. Others would just like to win more money. However, a lot of gambling players make use of the doubling cube just to make the game fast-paced.

Beavers

If poker gambling players can reraise whenever their opponents raise the stakes, gambling players of backgammon can do that as well. It is called the beavers. In backgammon, gambling players may double the stakes before rolling the dice by the use of the doubling cube, as explained above. Consequently, their opponents can redouble the stakes, making the game much more exciting.

You now know that some gambling players just double the stakes to scare away their opponents, but now, you will know that the opponents have the chance to scare them back through the beavers. Like the initial double, the redouble must be also called before rolling the dice so that the gambling players will have a settled agreement before the game proceeds any further.

The beavers are used more in gambling matches rather than in tournaments, that is why the gambling players are more familiar with the beavers than backgammon tournament players are.
