Backgammon and Life: Compared

Gambling and life, in many ways are very similar to each other. A lot of people gamble in life. Some even think that it is inevitable, that everyday each of us seems to be gambling in everything we do. Such parallelism can be seen in backgammon and our everyday life.

Everyday, we face challenges in our life, and a lot of us count on luck to give us a little push. Like for example, when on the way to work, we wish that we are lucky enough to get a taxi cab fast so that we won't be late. If lucky enough, we will indeed get a cab quickly, but what follows is really up to each of us, such as if we sleep on our job or do everything we must. It is always up to us to make do of what is given to us.

This is also true in backgammon. Players almost always wish to have lucky dice rolls. Heavens may grant their wishes and give them the luckiest rolls, but whether or not anything good would come out of it is really up to the backgammon players themselves. Some players have such poor decision making skills that they mess up their luckiest rolls and make such bad moves.

On some circumstances in our lives, we will desperately need all the luck we can get, such as in life and death situations. The instant we find out that our father needs a heart transplant fast to survive, we ask all the saints to make us lucky enough to find a suitable heart donor. Such circumstances also happen to gambling players in backgammon. Sometimes, players are presented with situations in which they need so much luck just stay in the game.

All of us have somehow developed ways on how to survive in life. Some play it aggressively, while others just wait for things to come their way. Moreover, there are others still who prefer to influence others to get things done instead of doing it on their own.

Backgammon players are very much familiar with these concepts. Players use these as their strategies in the game of backgammon. Some believe that playing it hard is more effective than playing passively. Others make moves that would influence or even force the opponent to make some moves that would benefit them and not the opponent.

It is clear, in life and in backgammon, people should be smart enough to be able to make it to the very end and not let luck alone be the single most important factor in life or in games.
